Plot Summary

In this story, we follow Hush and Grandma Poss navigate their native land of Australia. Grandma Poss uses her magic to make Hush invisible for safety. After a while, Hush wants to be seen again, but Grandma Poss does not have the right magic for that. The two begin their adventure around Australia to find the right magic by divulging cultural foods authentic to Australia.

Critical Analysis

Mem Fox is notorious for many great stories. Alongside Julie Vivas' beautiful illustrations, Fox tells a story of two possums to focus and highlight Australia. The two possums are native to Australia and they travel to famous cities of Australia to try native dishes. As Mem Fox is Australian herself, this book is a great resource as an international book for young children.

Fox's writing is quite rhythmic, which is popular for young children. It keeps them quite engaged with the story. The setting is quite neutral and does not feel dated, making this story timeless. Julie Vivas' illustrations complement this story by capturing Australia with beautiful, natural colors.

Mem Fox has a section on her website for this book specifically that has recipes from the book as well as a recording of her reading the book.
