Plot Summary
A BRIDE'S STORY, VOL. 1 is the start of a 3-book series. This story follows a 20-year-old woman, Amir Halgal, who is entering an arranged marriage with a 12-year-old boy from another tribe, Karluk. This all takes place in the 19th century along the Silk Road. Amir is learning to understand the customs of Karluk's family while also keeping her own alive.
Critical Analysis
A BRIDE'S STORY is a great mix of manga and historical fiction storytelling. The vibrant and detailed artwork seems to be carefully curated to bring readers into the 19th-century Silk Road era. The manga format pairs well to showcase this as well as Central Asian cultures and nomadic traditions. Visually showing the clothing, textiles, food, etc., really helps readers connect with it.
Readers get to learn how life would have been in this era through Amir. Amir is an interesting character as she is quite independent, smart, and talented, but is restricted through expectations and her arranged marriage. This helps readers understand gender roles, family structure, and traditions. However, much of women's lives were often controlled by this, but Mori wrote Amir to be more than that. This allows for a great read.
A major part of this book that modern readers (including me) may struggle with is the age difference. Karluk is only 12, and Amir is 8 years older. This is quite uncomfortable to read. While this story does take place in a different time period and where marriage customs were different, the age gap is hard to ignore.

Connections
This book can be used to show how manga can draw readers into the environment through art by showing how immersive the 19th century art is. Lessons on visual storytelling, gender roles, arranged marriage, and cultural traditions would work well too.
