Plot Summary

In this memoir in verse, Jacqueline Woodson tells the story of her childhood growing up as an African American girl in both South Carolina and New York during the 1960s and 1970s. Through a series of free verse poems, she reflects on her experiences with faith, family, identity, and Civil Rights Movement. They capture moments of confusion, discovery, and belonging through Woodson learning to find her voice as a young Black girl and writer.

Critical Analysis

Jacquelin Woodon’s writing is honest, emotional, and beautifully detailed. Her use of free verse makes every poem feel intimate and almost like she is sitting beside the reader sharing her memories out loud. All the imagery is vivid to where you can practically smell her grandmother’s cooking and feeling the tension of segregation. The rhythm feels natural in the poems, very conversational. It makes the story easy to connect to, especially for students who might see parts of themselves in her search for belonging.

What stands out most is how Woodson balances history with personal experience. The recurring theme of finding your voice through storytelling ties everything together, showing readers that writing and creativity is powerful through times of struggle, resulting in self-discovery.

Review Excerpts

Starred Review from the Booklist: “What is this book about? In an appended author’s note, Woodson says it best: my past, my people, my memories, my story.”

Connections

This book would be a great way to introduce students to verse novels and autobiographical poetry. It opens the door to meaningful writing activities, like creating an “I Am From” poem that celebrate each student’s own background and story. It can be paired with other verse novels that discuss identity to then have discussions about how poetry can be used to tell a life story, express emotion, and connect personal experiences to bigger themes.
